Our website numan did a survey on December 2018, “It’s the last  year of the Heisei era! Tell us your kodawari (about your favorite things)  in this questionnaire!”

According to the results we are going to report the latest on Otaku girls’ lifestyle which focuses mainly on women in their late teens to early twenties!

Becoming an Otaku starts around 11 years old!

We asked people in this survey about 33 questions, such as
“How long have you been an Otaku?”
“How much do you spend for your hobby (oshi)?”
“What kind of events have you joined?” etc.

Then we compared the answers of their Otaku history with their ages, and we found that 11 years old is the most common age that girls become aware that they are Otaku.

The graph of  “Otaku awareness age” is below.

The results are high for 9 years old to 10 years old, then peaked at the highest with 11 years old, followed by 13 years old. The result shows 11 years old is the most common age that girls realize they are an Otaku.

11 years old is just 5th grade in primary school. Then, what sort of developmental stage are they at in 5th grade?

Below, the characteristics of development are described in late primary school as mentioned on the website of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

○ Children are able to analyze things objectively, and also they can pursue more complicated things in intellectual activities.
As well as this, they recognize themselves objectively.
But on the other hand, the individual differences are remarkable. (It is called “The wall of 9 years old” in Japan)

Although it is difficult to describe, children can eventually do abstract thinking; and it is the time for children to understand about abstract concepts such as “friendship”.

Bennese Corporation described “abstract thinking” as on their website as follows:

What an abstract thinking ability is, is the ability to understand and imagine things. For example, “percentage” does not mean that the proportion itself actually exists. When you understand “200 yen is 20% of 1000 yen”, you need to understand the meaning of “20%” in your head, then imagine it.

Older primary age children develop this abstract thinking ability.
In order to develop the way of abstract thinking, like “percentage”, they can understand other difficult and complicated things deeply.

And because of the development of an abstract thinking ability, children can learn about the world from information through books and news, and imagine things specifically from simply hearing a description, even they don’t actually see or experience it.

Due to the development of an abstract thinking ability, children can be moved by characters from animation or media, and even children can cry for characters when something sad happens.

They can enjoy the world of fiction (like anime, comics, games and light novels) in more depth due to understanding the story and sympathizing with characters.

According to this, they will understand the story not only just for entertainment purposes, but also deeply relate to the characters and story personally and emotionally.

That can be the beginning of becoming an Otaku.

It is interesting that those surveyed remembered the same age when they looked back at their history as Otaku.
Usually, someone will decide whether or not to be an Otaku around 5th grade in primary school.

At numan we are also showing other real otaku girls’ lifestyles based on in this survey below. Check it out!
